Put Your Habits On Easy Mode [WRAP 182]
Hey Reader, a quick reminder the HeyCreator Summit is just over a week away. One of my favorite aspects of the speakers, people like Anne-Laure, Ed Latimore, Darrell Vesterfelt, and Chenell Basilio... is they didn't wait around for someone to tell them to do the thing they wanted to do. Because here's the truth... you don’t need permission to be a creator. That's what I love about it! But sometimes? You need proof. Or should I say, support? Proof that people like you—with families, doubts, weird ideas, and too little time—are doing it. That’s what the HeyCreator Summit is about. I’m bringing together some of the most generous, experienced creators I know. People who are making it work, on their own terms, and sharing what they’ve learned. It’s August 12–13. It’s free. And it just might give you the spark you need. Professor BJ Fogg once ran a study where two groups were asked to report on how many minutes they ran in a month. That's not the full story though. The first group was only measure on minutes run. The second group was also asked to report minutes run, but they were graded on whether or not they put on their shoes. Here's the funny thing... the second group had the "easier" assignment. They were only graded on putting shoes on. But it turned out they also ran more minutes than the first group. It made me realize I usually put my habits on "hard mode," like big workouts or 3 pages of journaling. Instead, I (and you) could set the bar much lower to kickstart the habit and let the first small step (no pun intended for the runners) carry me to the next natural thing. I remember reading about this years ago in Twyla Tharp's book The Creative Habit. She said her dancing habit wasn't about going to the studio to dance for an hour, instead her tiny habit was to get dressed and hail a cab. I went into a lot more detail in the video, check it out here. If you like it, give a like and comment. Those little things help the video reach more people! 📖 What I'm Reading: Novel + Help DocsI just started reading The Tainted Cup on recommendation from my brother, Mark. He's been writing a lot about books, the hero's journey, and personal growth. Follow him on X and I'll let you know when his Substack is live. The other thing I'm reading is Claude help docs while I think my way through Claude Code. My friends Cathryn and Nat have both been talking up the tool in recent weeks, so it's time to dive in and level up from Cursor to Claude. Or at the very least try to level up. Have a great weekend, Matt P.S. I've started sending daily emails on productivity and getting things done. The feedback has been great, but some have asked to ONLY receive the WRAP. |
